As a member of the leadership team of the Leadership, Professional Practice and Accountability Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training, I was part of a collaborative decision to participate in the High Performance Mindset program led by Professor Michael Bernard.
The professional learning provided to individual directors such as myself strongly supported me in developing my ability to lead self and others. The framework provided a research-based reference for reflection and discussion that enabled me to develop both my own learning plan, as well as to work with my teams to develop a branch and division-wide approach. The common language of the program enabled a greater depth of discussion and sharing of understandings between individuals, teams and branches. I personally found the individual coaching sessions and development of my personal plan of great value, supporting me to demonstrate greater empathy and building a greater shared commitment to high performance.
My managers particularly benefited from the training in high impact conversations, and led these at both branch level and with their individual team members. Initially there was some hesitation to get started, but once underway and seeing the impact of these, they developed a momentum, which was critical in developing higher levels of performance. Due to a series of restructures and leadership changes, there was a real need to surface the concerns and development needs of team members – these conversations supported greater engagement and understanding of the role of team members in their own development and the over-arching culture of the division.
When I moved on from this position, I felt that the team were much better positioned to deal with continued change without a significant dip in morale or work perform.
